Northeastern Indiana Regional Coordinating Council has conducted transportation planning activities for the Metropolitan Planning Area for the last three decades. The remaining portion of the region, including the smaller urban areas, does not meet the traditional federal requirements for transportation planning activities in the urbanized area. However, an interdependent relationship exists between the smaller urban communities, the rural areas, and the Metropolitan Planning Area. These areas have a interdependent relationship with each benefiting from the resources and socioeconomic composition of the other. A planning decision in one community can influence the planning decisions in the surrounding communities. In addition, air quality concerns and issues require an expanded role by the Metropolitan Planning Organization involving data collection and planning efforts. Coordination, cooperation, and an understanding of the problems each area faces helps to support a well designed and efficient transportation system.
